“Over the last year, the ad-supported internet has educated us, entertained us, connected us, and protected us. While ALM is clearly designed to highlight our most important industry issues, and set a clear agenda for the year ahead, now more than ever it is important to think about a broader context. With a lineup of speakers including Dr. Fauci, Ms. Abrams, and Senator Wyden, we intend to expand our field of view and look beyond our industry for inspiration,” said David Cohen, CEO, IAB. “We have created an agenda that will not disappoint and will provide attendees with not only insights they can put into practice, but also provide them with the tools they need to tackle 2021 head on.”

ALM will also provide a forum to discuss the future of accountability and addressability as the countdown to the deprecation of third-party cookies draws near. IAB Tech Lab will share a robust update and insights related to the organization’s year-long work, which launched at ALM 2020. These will include presentations around the proposed solutions for privacy-preserving addressability and industry accountability. The new accountability platform is based on the responsible use of data and guiding principles for a user-centric approach. A new global privacy platform and taxonomies are also part of the solutions that will be presented for predictable consumer privacy through standards.

NEW YORK, NY (January 14, 2021) – The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), the digital media and marketing trade association, today invited industry leaders to come together at their Annual Leadership Meeting (ALM) on March 8-12, to discuss the future of the digital media and marketing industry.

2020 left the industry in an entirely new place. This is a critical inflection point for how brands are born and thrive, how advertising is defined, how measurement and attribution happen, and much more. Seismic changes are happening fast, and all at once — ALM is the chance for industry leaders to collectively identify and shape industry priorities to create the future state of the digital ecosystem.

“Events over the past year have changed our industry and our world in critical, permanent ways. This makes ALM 2021: The Great Reset, the most pivotal, must-attend industry event of the year,” said David Cohen, CEO, IAB. “This is the moment for the industry to come together and find clarity, set direction, and push ahead on the initiatives, standards, and policies that will drive industry growth.”

ALM will be a virtual week-long summit including keynote addresses, town hall discussions, and interactive roundtables, as well as invite-only leadership sessions.

“When the industry looks back at this Great Reset in ten or twenty years, we won’t remember what ended in 2020,” added Cohen. “Instead, we’ll remember this moment as the start of entirely new ways to build consumer relationships, a new generation of digital experiences with privacy, personalization, and safety at the core, and a smarter, more diverse industry, with the creativity of everyone fully represented.”

The Interactive Advertising Bureau and the IAB Tech Lab share the fears of our diverse staff and membership that the democratic principles underlying the Constitutional basis of republican government in the United States are under assault. Powerful individuals, groups, and some Government officials are disenfranchising African-Americans and other minority groups, suppressing voting rights, inciting local police to harm citizens exercising their First Amendment rights, and promoting violence against the press. Rather than simply condemn these actions, we encourage our staff and members to work to further American democracy. Accordingly, we are giving the entire staff of the IAB and the Tech Lab up to two days of paid time off per month between now and Election Day – November 3, 2020 – to work on a political or social campaign of their choice, for candidates of any party or causes that reflect their personal values and beliefs. We hope this pro bono effort by the IAB team will help improve civic discourse, generate more participation in worthy causes, and effect meaningful, lasting change in the United States of America.

The age-old expression “May you live in interesting times,” seems especially prescient given the events of the past few days and months. At IAB, our role of bringing together publishers, tech enablers, brands, and buyers, large and small, to discuss ways of reducing friction in the marketplace, seems especially important given the realities of a rapidly shifting media landscape. While interactive advertising, publishing, and media are the core focus at IAB, the reality is, advertising is by its very nature, a conversation with consumers of varying perspectives and world views, which marketers must understand in order to be and stay relevant with their audiences.

With a goal of helping provide marketers and publishers with insights and perspective on the diverse cultures and world views that are the foundation of a shared American identity and society, the IAB Multicultural Council met recently to reassess and reinvigorate its mission of promoting the vibrancy, strength, and growth of the multicultural marketplace across the digital media landscape.

In his opening address at the council’s Q4 planning meeting, Diego Antista, U.S. Multicultural Agency Head at Google, and Co-Chair of the IAB Multicultural Council, asked the IAB community and the media industry as a whole to stand together and speak out on the importance of diversity as a core value on which America was built.

In These Interesting Times, the Work of IAB’s Multicultural Council Matters “Today more than ever as the IAB Multicultural Council, we should stand together to raise our voice and presence to ensure the Multicultural communities of this country are heard, valued, and included” – Diego Antista, U.S. Multicultural Agency Head, Google

The group agreed as a next step to launch a working group, focused on the creation of a “Comprehensive Guide to Multicultural Digital Marketing.” The compilation will serve as a reference for all things multicultural in the digital advertising space, supporting core values of diversity and inclusion while providing best practices and guidance for the development of more relevant marketing and communications. In its initial phase, the group will collaborate on a comprehensive ‘table of contents,’ providing a web-based document framework that will enable multiple contributors to consolidate and highlight existing reports/guidelines/research/one-sheets/primers already published by IAB or the IAB Multicultural Council, while ensuring that the identified documents remain updated, relevant, and current.

The group will then identify owners by areas of expertise and interest to work on various sections or to partner with groups within the IAB. This collaborative approach will help bring a multicultural perspective to various digital media work streams. The guide will be updated by the group’s members on a continuous basis and will provide source material for marketers seeking to understand how best to market to and with diverse communities and their members who identify with a particular culture, ethnicity, gender, or identity.

For a listing of the members of the Multicultural Council, visit here. For information on how to get involved, contact IAB staff liaison, Val Baron, val@iab.com.
